IH Coursework Requirement

Your IH Courses

Refer to the CIH Candidate Handbook to help you verify that you have completed 180 academic contact hours or 240 continuing education contact hours of specific industrial hygiene courses. At least half of the courses must cover the broad subjects of industrial hygiene.

Broad Subjects

1. Fundamentals courses are likely to address recognizing hazards/stressors found in the work environment. These include chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic stressors.

2. Acceptable toxicology courses cover the essential aspects of toxicology, with an emphasis on humans. Topics covered likely include dose-response relationships; absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of toxic substances in the body; biotransformation; organ systems; and chemical carcinogenesis and mutagenesis.

3. Measurement courses and control (engineering, substitution, administrative, PPE) courses will address the same four broad stressor categories as fundamentals.

Specialized Courses

The remaining coursework may be in industrial hygiene subjects that are narrower in scope, such as asbestos, lead, mold, or confined space entry. Initial and refresher courses can only be counted once.

Stand-alone IH related exams

1.  Stand-alone IH-related exams may be used for IH coursework contact hours.  Stand-alone exams are those offered independently from other educational activities:  examples include specialty or registry exams.

2.  One narrow scope continuing education contact hour can be counted for each hour of the IH component of the exam. Exams must be at least 1 hour in duration.

3.  Evidence of passing the exam, documentation of exam duration, and the exam blueprint for the version of the exam you have taken must be provided.

Using combinations of Academic and Education Courses

1. Academic courses, continuing education courses, or a combination can be submitted. One semester hour equals 15 academic contact hours or 20 continuing education contact hours. One quarter hour equals 10 academic contact hours or 13 continuing education contact hours. One CEU equals 10 continuing education contact hours.

2. The courses can be classroom or distance learning (online courses, webinars, for instance).

3. For documentation of continuing education contact hours, copies of certificates need uploaded online. If the number of contact hours or CEUs is not clearly stated on the certificate, official supporting information (agendas, calendars, syllabi, etc.) must be uploaded along with the certificate.

Ethics Courses

1. New applicants are required to document that they have completed at least 2 contact hours of coursework in Ethics. This will count as part of the current Industrial Hygiene coursework requirement.

2. Credit for ethics is capped at 5 contact hours.

3. Acceptable ethics courses include business conflicts, workplace relationships, technical judgment that compromises the values of an organization, integrity, professional conduct, confidentiality of sensitive information, conflict of interest, and intellectual property rights/plagiarism.
